Description
The RailGuard is a compact circuit that protects your vintage game’s logic boards from power supply overvoltage events. A failing or drifting power supply can send damaging voltage spikes to your logic board, destroying irreplaceable ICs in an instant. The RailGuard clamps the voltage and blows the fuse before that can happen.
Why You Need It
Vintage games from the late 1970s and 1980s use linear power supplies that can drift over time, or can suffer regulator failure. An overvoltage event on a power supply rail can instantly destroy CPUs, ROMs, PIAs, and other chips that are no longer manufactured. The RailGuard is cheap insurance against a very expensive repair — or an irreplaceable loss.
How It Works
The RailGuard uses a precision voltage to monitor your power supply voltage. When the voltage exceeds a safe threshold, the circuit fires and shorts the rail, blowing the upstream fuse and cutting power before voltage can damage your logic board ICs.
Features
- Passive protection — Works automatically, no configuration needed
- Precision trigger — TL431A-based reference for accurate, repeatable threshold
- Fast response — Fires before sustained overvoltage can cause damage
- Simple installation — Connects to the power supply on your logic board, with optional remote sensing to compensate for wiring resistance.
- Small form factor — 50×50 mm board is easy to install
